Forty three of Kiama’s Little Athletes made the long trek to Leeton for the Regional Championships on the weekend of February 21 to 22. Region 4 is made up of four Zones with Centres from Eastern Riverina, Mid South Coast, South Coast Highlands and Western Riverina. Across the four zones there are 30 individual Little Athletics Centres.
The Kiama Centre performed strongly on a hot weekend of track and field competition, with many athletes securing first and second place, automatically qualifying them for the State Track and Field Championships at Sydney Olympic Park from March 20 to 22.
Among the highlights was the performance of Under 10 athlete, Taj Ford, who claimed gold in the 800m and 1500m, putting him on track to defend the State title he won in 2014. Also bagging two gold medals was Cassidy Morris who took out the 15 girls long jump and triple jump double. Another outstanding performance came from Georgia Richards in the Under 11 Girls who stormed home to win gold in 800m against some strong competition after placing third in the 1500m the previous day. Congratulations to Reilly Caswell who finished first in the Under 8 Boys 60 metre hurdles, Jake Cleal-Cook who won the Under 17 Boys 200 metre hurdles and Grace Mahon who finished first in the Under 13 Girls long jump. Well done to the Page boys, Matthew and Christian, who each claimed a gold medal in the Under 8 Boys discus and the 10 Boys walk respectively.
Well done to Samuel Aubin, Maggie Page and Tyrell Taione who have joined the list of State qualifiers based upon performance in their respective events.
