It has been a record breaking season in more ways than one for the Kiama Little Athletics Centre.
This Friday night, March 13, marks the end of the season for Kiama Little Athletics although ten (10) Kiama athletes will represent the Centre at the State Championships in Homebush from March 20 to 22.
On the back of some strong performances at the Region 4 Championships in Leeton, there were some remarkable efforts at the club competition night on Friday, February 27 when no less than eight (8) Centre records tumbled.
Three (3) of the records were set by Ewan Bell in the Under 17 Boys javelin, long jump and 3000m. Grace Mahon set a new Under 13 Girls record in long jump with a leap of 4.61m, while over at the javelin another of the 13 girls, Maggie Page, set a new mark of 21.03m. Fresh from his success at Leeton, Taj Ford smashed the club’s under 10 boys 1500m record with a time of 5:16.10 adding to the 800m record he set earlier in February. Nathan Scollary’s time of 11 min 43 seconds was a new record for the Under 13 Boys 3000m, while under 6 boy Gabriel Lombardi ran the 300m in a time of 1:02.90 to set a new mark in that event. Earlier in February Gabriel and fellow under 6 speedster Bailey Egan both set new club records in 200m and 150m respectively.
Special mention also to Jake Cleal-Cook for his efforts in setting a new record in the under 17 boys high jump in January. Jake’s jump of 1.61m was the highest recorded at a Kiama competition night in the club’s 37 year history.
Good luck to all the athletes competing at the State championships next weekend.
The Centre’s Presentation night is set down for Friday March 27 and will be held at the Kiama Sports Complex this year.
