Kiama athletes lit up the track and field at the Mid South Coast Zone championships held at the Kiama Sports Complex on the 13th and 14th of December.
Against some tough competition from the Lake Illawarra, Albion Park, Shoalhaven, St Georges Basin, and Milton-Ulladulla Centres, Kiama athletes did the club proud in the way they competed.
Athletes who finished in the top three progress to the Region 4 championships to be held at Leeton in February 2015. To date 51 Kiama athletes have qualified for the Region 4 championships but more are expected to qualify on “next best” times and distances as results from other Zones filter through.
Among Kiama’s gold medal winners on the weekend were Under 8 girls Ella-Mae North (70m), and Amelia Weatherlake (100m and 60m hurdles). Imogen Harrison (Under 9) and Georgia Richards (Under 11) both held off a top class field to win the long jump, Cassidy Morris took out the Under 15 triple jump and Sienna Bell the Under 10 discus. Under 13 girl Maggie Page won double gold in the javelin and discus.
In the boys Taj Ford (Under 10) claimed the 800m and 1500m double, Thomas North jumped 1.43m to claim the Under 13 high jump, Christian Page won the Under 10 boys discus, Tyrell Taione the Under 10 boys shot put, Dylan Egan the Under 11 boys long jump and in the Under 8 boys 60m hurdles there was a Kiama trifecta with Reilly Caswell, Jordan Poole and Cooper Deegan claiming medals. Levi Randle (Under 12) and Fynn Cohen (Under 13) both claimed gold in the 1500m.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the weekend such a success.
Results from the championships are available here.
Last but not least a big congratulations to club stalwart Craig Scott for winning the sports administrator award at the inaugural Kiama Electorate Community Recognition Awards presented last week by His Excellency General David Hurley, Governor of New South Wales. Congratulations Craig on some well deserved recognition.
We hope everyone has a happy and safe Christmas and see you back on the track on January 9.
