Twenty two (22) of Kiama’s Little Athletes made the long trip to Jubilee Park in Wagga Wagga for the Region 4 Championships on the weekend of February 11 to 12. Region 4 is made up of four (4) Zones with Centres from Eastern Riverina, Mid South Coast, South Coast Highlands and Western Riverina. Across the four (4) Zones there are twenty eight (28) individual Little Athletics Centres.
Saturday saw temperatures soar resulting in competition being suspended early in the afternoon. The 3000m events were completed late on Saturday evening after competition was once again suspended. On this occasion it was due to a thunder storm. Sunday’s program was quite hectic due to the addition of events that were not completed on Saturday. In striking contrast to Saturday the weather conditions on Sunday were quite cool, windy and punctuated by showers.
The Kiama Centre had seven (7) athletes secure first and second places automatically qualifying them for the State Track and Field Championships at Sydney Olympic Park from March 17 to 19.
Among the highlights were the performances of Under 13 athlete, Georgia Richards, and Under 15 athlete, Nathan Scollary, who both claimed gold in the 800m and 1500m. Grace Mahon finished first in the Under 15 Girls 3000m. Emma Scollary also won gold in the Under 15-17 100m Para event. Under 12 athlete, Eliza Schweitzer picked up silver in the 60m/h, 200m and Long Jump.
Well done to Alicia Buazin who has joined the list of State qualifiers based upon performance in several events.
This means that a total of eight (8) Kiama athletes have qualified for the State Track and Field Championships.
